The international
edition of the new cult memo game! The photographer and
journalist Freddy Langer has been taking pictures of prominent
artists with his Polaroid camera for at least a quarter
of a century: film stars like Claudia Cardinale and Dennis
Hopper, photographers like Helmut Newton and Wolfgang Tillmans,
visual artists like Fernando Botero and Tomi Ungerer, and
authors like Louis Begley and Michel Houellebecq. What’s
remarkable about it: He shoots not only one, but two pictures
of each of the world-famous characters – wearing
two different sleep masks.

It’s
the fact that the persons behind the mask are still recognizable
that makes this series so intriguing. Above all, though,
the celebrities are disclosing new aspects of their personality. “Astonishingly
enough, by being hidden under the mask, these faces,
which have been photographed a thousand times, loose
their usually mask-like appearance,” the photographer
noticed.
In
the memo game, the two different pictures of each celebrity
form a match, while the players go on an inspiring yet
at the same time ironical excursion through the contemporary
artists scene. Included
in the memo game are a sleep mask and two blank cards
allowing the creation of one’s own sleep mask portraits,
which then become part of the game.
The memo game will appear in the form of a catalogue
on the occasion of the exhibition “WHO is WHO? – Sleep
Mask Portraits by Freddy Langer” shown in the art
space Frankfurter KunstBlock, Hanauer Landstrasse 139,
60314 Frankfurt (Germany), from 17 September to 13 November
2009.
